West of Santa Luzia is a narrow gauge railway across Tavira Island to Praia do Barril. The railway was for the use of the fishermen who lived on the island for several months each year, to help them move their catch (tuna) and equipment. After the fishery closed in 1966 the fishermen's houses and railway were converted for the use of tourists.

3 small craft pulled up on a quiet spot in Fuseta. The difference between low tide and high tide here is staggering. There's a lagoon between the outer sandy island and the mainland which almost empties. Visually the contrast is amazing.
